Dreamy Guest Room Make-over

Monday, March 19, 2012

This is a Dream Guest Room.

The biggest problem would be getting the Guest's to Leave...
The hardest part about designing a room is finding all the components that bring it together.
{With this room we didn't really have that problem!}
It came together so easily, it was almost to easy.

We knew what we wanted, and we didn't want to spend a lot of money. Our main goal- use what we had.
Check.

The uber-talented Karen upholstered this headboard/footboard combination and the chair.
Those 2 things were the kick off for the whole design.
When I saw this material I knew exactly what to do with the design.
A mix of our favorite whites, creams, grays, and burlaps, and then add a pop of Green.
Perfect.

We were lucky enough to find the grey "oops" paint from Lowe's, it was perfect.
(Like I said before, it really couldn't be that easy, could it?!)
The walls were already trimmed with breadboard so we didn't have to do anything with that, we just painted the top part and ceiling gray.

We made a few trips to Target, TJMax, JoAnn's, and Ross for some of the little details, but after it was all said and done the only thing we actually bought for this room were the sheets (Ross), the white duvet cover and the little white tray (Target), magnifying glass (TJMax), and the sweet hanging basket on the wall (JoAnn's.)
Everything else we had, either to sell at the Market or left over from past Markets.

Now I feel like the QUEEN of the room belongs to the headboard/footboard.
She didn't start out so glamorous though.
We had to do some serious sanding and priming to get it to it's original beauty. Then a good coat of white, some distressing, and a few added wooden decals to finish it off.
Not to mention the amazing upholstery job, it was trial and error, but since Karen knows what she is doing she was able to bring it all together.

We make a great team, she does the dirty work and I do the designing and make decisions, and somehow it all comes together! (Sometimes I do the dirty work and she does the designing, it's really a joint effort!)

And of course, the little things are what makes a room complete.
The cedar chest is a heirloom from my Grandma Rasmussen, I love adding something old and natural to a room to give it a story. I like to think that my Grandma would have LOVED this room,.

It's hard to pick a favorite thing in this room because it all is so spectacular. But I will admit, I do love this chair. Everything about it, the green stripe, the distressed white wood, the burlap cording, and the sweet ruffle pillow... its fantastic.
The bed may be the Queen, but the chair is the Princess! ;)

Lighting was also a challenge in this odd shaped room. My dad got his skills together and wired this chandelier, it originally was a plug-in light, but with a hanging kit he made it work as a hanging light. He's cool like that.

The vintage side table light is one of a set we have had for sale at our past markets, we love the olive green of the glass.  I have been so excited to find a spot for this gem, they really finish it off.

Karen made the pillows from left over material we have used on other projects, and the tucked shams she made from simple white cotton.

 Isn't she lovely.
We find ourselves going into this room and just staring, she really turned out beautiful.
I can see the Guest list starting to fill up fast!

{A Dining Room Makeover}

Monday, March 5, 2012
This was my Mother's dining room BEFORE...
{We weren't to smart and didn't take actual BEFORE pictures, this is the best we could find, just an idea of what it used to look like.}
Just your regular oak table and chairs, some sweet floral curtains, lots of rod iron, and a antiqued bronze chandler... typical.
Nothing great, but everything had a purpose.

A change was in order.
First we had to find something to INSPIRE us.
We knew for a long time we wanted to do this, it just had to be right.
So we waited for it to all come together before we started!

Then this happened...my mom and I just happened to going to town one day and saw a pickup truck with these 6 chairs in the back. I quickly turned around and was on a mission to see is we could buy them! Turned out the man was going to take ALL 6 CHAIRS to the DUMP! WHAT?? We were glad to take them off his hands, and he was glad to get rid of them. Seriously!!

It was probably the greatest day ever!

So, all 6 chairs were FREE...
granted, they all needed work, the pads were disgusting and they wood needed some serious TLC, but nothing that we couldn't tackle!

Our favorite, this beautiful "Shield Chair," we have been looking for one like this forever, and we were about to cry from happiness when we learned she would be ours!! Lovely.

So without Further Ado.....

The REVIEL!!

A new Dinning table and Chairs, new crisp curtains, and a beautiful new light!

We knew the Color Scheme we wanted, White, Cream, Black and Burlap... very neutral and very cozy.

First we had to take the table and strip it down, then we sprayed it white, then more distressing and staining. The chairs had to be stripped as well, then sprayed, then sanded, and finally glazed.
And not to forget the cushions, we found the material at Home Goods and my talented mother did the upholstery job all on her own, no tutorials here! Just a little trial and error, I love the little skirts she gave them... so sweet.

The Great Black Hutch we found from a little store in Rigby called, Traditions, a few years ago. We just filled it with my mother's Milk Glass and White Ceramic Collection, a very simple but beautiful look.

Also this Beautiful Chandelier came from Utah, found also from a man just trying to get rid of things.
It was a steal, and completely finished the room.

Here is a look of the whole room, its right smack dab in the middle of the house, its basically the "walk way," so it really sets the mood for the rest of the home.

We love all the small details,

Ruffles and small burlap bunting,
 and a little bling!

Isn't it Lovely?
We think so.

And we are excited to announce that we will be now offering Interior Design Consults.
